Choosing the right beach is key for your Phuket stay!
Phuket is the largest island in Thailand, surrounded by numerous beaches of various sizes. Each beach has its own unique character, and the choice of where to stay can shape your entire Phuket experience.
Consider your travel goals, personal style, group composition, and length of stay when selecting a beach and hotel. Doing so will make your trip to Phuket more fulfilling and enjoyable.
West Coast Beaches Are the Most Popular
The west coast of Phuket stretches about 48 km from north to south. The waters along the west coast belong to the Andaman Sea, which opens directly to the Indian Ocean. This is why Phuket’s west coast is home to many long, expansive beaches shaped by ocean waves.
During the best season (November to May), the beaches on the west coast feature crystal-clear waters and stunning shades of blue. You can also enjoy spectacular tropical sunsets over the Andaman Sea from these beaches.
Many popular beaches, such as Patong Beach and Kata Beach, are concentrated along Phuket’s west coast. Patong Beach is the busiest and most developed, with the largest number of hotels and visitors on the island.
Patong Beach is located near the center of the west coast. Other main beaches, like Kata Beach and Karon Beach, are located north and south along the west coast, flanking Patong Beach.
The east coast beaches of Phuket have shallow waters and lower transparency, and there are fewer hotels and accommodations. Consequently, fewer tourists visit, and the pace of development is slower, offering glimpses into local daily life.
While there are fewer hotels used for package tours, Phuket Town (the island’s provincial capital) and Phuket Port are located on the southern east coast. Tours to nearby islands, such as Phi Phi and Kai Islands, as well as diving tours, depart from Chalong Bay on the southern east coast.
Patong Beach is Phuket’s main beach, always bustling with tourists. Restaurants, shops, and water sports are all concentrated in this lively area.
Kata Beach is a small and beautiful beach, popular as a resort area. There are also many stylish restaurants to enjoy.
Karon Beach is a long beach with several kilometers of beautiful sand, offering a relaxed atmosphere.
Bang Tao Beach is a resort area centered around Laguna Phuket, featuring several luxury hotels.
Nai Harn Beach is popular among long-term European residents and offers a peaceful atmosphere.
Surin Beach is a quiet, small beach with many luxury hotels and villa-type resorts nearby.
Kamala Beach is a quiet beach with a calm and relaxing atmosphere.
Nai Yang Beach is a hidden gem located within Sirinat National Park, preserving natural surroundings.
Rawai Beach is at the southern tip of Phuket, a quiet area preserving traditional scenery. Recently, luxury hotels have started to appear.
