Nai Yang Beach

Image / Phuket Sightseeing Guide / Nai Yang Beach #1

Nai Yang Beach, located about a 10-minute drive from Phuket Airport, faces the west coast of Phuket. Designated as a national park, most of the beach and inland areas remain in their natural state. The beach is pristine, with clean sand and clear waters.

Being part of a national park, commercial development is limited. With few resorts or hotels, it is more accessible to local Thais (most resorts restrict local access). On weekends, many Thai families visit. Along the shore, there are numerous local Thai-style restaurants.

The shallow waters of Nai Yang Beach extend to coral reefs, making it ideal for snorkeling and swimming on calm days during the season. For visitors with ample time on Phuket who are looking for a quiet, clean beach, this is a perfect spot for a scenic drive and beach visit.

Nai Yang National Park

Nai Yang National Park includes Mai Khao Beach to the north, Nai Yang Beach in the center, and Nathon Beach to the south as wildlife conservation areas. Each year between November and February, sea turtles come to lay eggs on the beaches. Some nests belong to four endangered turtle species, making this area rich in natural beauty.

The national park office provides brochures and maps about the park. A visitor center on the northern side of the beach showcases corals and fish. The park extends up to 5 km offshore, with shallow waters averaging 6 meters deep and diverse coral reefs.

Mangrove Forests

North of Mai Khao Beach, mangrove forests stretch about 1 km. These mangroves play a crucial role in preserving coastal ecosystems. The area hosts many rare perennial plants, and visitors can explore them along walking trails while observing diverse nature.

Sea Turtle Nesting

Every year from November to February, sea turtles come ashore to lay eggs. On the Thai New Year, April 13, a turtle release event is held, where hatchlings raised in artificial incubation can be purchased for 200 Baht each and released into the sea.

Turtle nesting times depend on the sea and weather conditions. They come ashore from sunset to midnight. Visitors should avoid noise and light until turtles begin laying eggs. Flash photography is allowed only once nesting starts, and hatchlings should not be exposed to light.
