A Beach with Local Thai Atmosphere

Located just before the eastern side of Phuket’s southernmost viewpoint, “Promthep Cape,” Rawai Beach has a small island in front that protects it from waves. Facing the east side of Phuket Island, it remains calm all year round and is not much affected by seasonal monsoon winds.
Because of the calm waters, many local fishing boats are moored here.
The sea is not ideal for marine sports or swimming. Nearby, there is also a village of the Moken, Phuket’s indigenous people with a unique culture.

Rawai Beach has few large hotels or facilities, providing a quiet environment. Unlike the western resort beaches, this beach has a distinctly local atmosphere.

Local fishermen based at Rawai Beach sell fresh fish at roadside stalls, and there are seafood BBQ stands frequented by locals. These stalls offer fresh seafood from the nearby southern waters, often at much lower prices than in town (around half the price of Patong Beach restaurants!).

Enjoy Seafood at Rawai Beach

Numerous seafood restaurants line the beach. Most are popular with local Thais, offering seafood at very affordable prices.

Some restaurants have traditional floor-seating (tatami-style). Although floor-seating restaurants have mostly disappeared in Thailand due to regulations, they are still active here. Visitors from Bangkok enjoy them with delight. The scene evokes a nostalgic feeling, reminiscent of Japan’s cherry blossom viewing.
Tourists rarely encounter unique local delicacies such as the crab “Poo Cha Ka Chan,” which is only available in Phuket. Other rare items like horseshoe crabs, protected in Japan, may also appear. Common seafood like mackerel or shrimp, grilled over charcoal, is exceptionally delicious. On weekend evenings, these areas become very crowded, so it’s advisable to reserve a spot while the sun is still up.
