Toilet Practices in Thailand You Should Know

Thai Toilets: Different from Japan

In Phuket, hotels and restaurants generally have Western-style toilets, but public toilets in tourist areas and local eateries still mainly use Thai-style toilets. Thai-style toilets come in two main types: one similar to a Western toilet (or perhaps a broken Western-style toilet) and one resembling a Japanese squat toilet.
For the squat-style Thai toilet, the hole is oriented in the opposite direction compared to a Japanese squat toilet. You should squat facing the opposite direction. In Japan, when you squat, the door is behind you, but in Thailand, it is in front. Make sure to lock the door, or you might awkwardly face someone if it’s accidentally opened (haha).

For the other type, a Western-style Thai toilet without a seat (or a broken one), you cannot sit directly. You place your feet on the rim and squat, similar to using a Japanese-style toilet. If the toilet is not firmly fixed, you could fall or tip it over, so check its stability before use. (A true story!)

Both types often have a small shower beside the toilet, which functions as a bidet to clean yourself with water. If there is no small shower, a bucket of water may be provided for washing. Traditionally, Thais did not use toilet paper, but in Phuket, its use is becoming more common. However, some places still do not provide toilet paper, so carrying your own is advisable.

Due to local sewage systems, even in Western-style toilets, flushing paper can easily cause clogs. Follow any posted instructions and use the provided trash bins for toilet paper and sanitary products. Sanitary products are available in convenience stores and supermarkets, but if you are concerned, bringing your own is recommended.
