Available Transportation in Phuket

Shared Pickup Truck "Songthaew"

A Thai-style regular shuttle connecting Phuket Town with various beaches. The back of the truck is modified with a roof and seats. Songthaews follow fixed routes, starting from the market area on Ranong Road in Phuket Town, and run to each beach. Operating hours are 7:00–18:00, departing approximately every 30 minutes. There is no formal timetable, so passengers should be patient. Bus stop signs have a bus symbol, but some drivers may allow you to get off at other safe locations. Fares are inexpensive: from Phuket Town to Patong, Kata, or Karon Beach, about 30 THB (takes 30 minutes to 1 hour). To get off, pull the string inside the vehicle or tap the rear window near the driver.

Tuk-Tuk: Unique to Thailand

Different from the types seen in Bangkok, tuk-tuks are convenient for moving between beaches. They are small trucks modified with passenger seats, often in bright colors. Tuk-tuks don’t have meters, so fares must be negotiated before riding. Confirm whether the fare is per person or per vehicle to avoid misunderstandings. Tuk-tuks are relatively easy to find in Phuket Town, Patong Beach, Kata Beach, and other tourist areas. In less crowded areas, it is recommended to charter them round-trip in advance. Within Patong Beach, fares are 200–400 THB per vehicle. From Patong to Phuket Town or Kata Beach, fares start at 400 THB per vehicle. Prices vary depending on time, destination, and number of passengers. Tuk-tuks are open-air, so smoke, rain, or wind may enter during travel, making them less ideal for long trips.

Metered Taxis

Identified by a yellow body and a "TAXI METER" sign on the roof. Metered taxis are still not common in Phuket, so fares are usually negotiated. If you find a taxi with a meter, make sure it is running when you start your ride.

Motorcycle Taxi

As the name suggests, motorcycle taxis use motorbikes to transport passengers. They can be easily found waiting at main points in town such as hotels, intersections, and in front of shopping malls. Drivers wear green or red vests with numbers on the back for easy identification. Fares are negotiable and increase with distance. Within Phuket Town, fares are around 20 THB. They are fast, but as two-wheeled vehicles, motorcycles are less safe than tuk-tuks or songthaews. Initially, this service may feel unusual, but in congested areas, they can weave through traffic and reach your destination faster than any other transport, making them very useful depending on the situation.
