Etiquette and Manners

Manners in Thailand

Thai People Are Devout Buddhists

90% of the population practices Buddhism. While Japan has a relatively weak religious influence, Thai daily life is deeply influenced by Buddhist customs. This often creates a sense of familiarity for Japanese visitors. Culturally, Thai food culture, which centers around rice as the staple, and the respect for elders may also feel familiar. However, there are differences in daily habits, so while traveling, you should follow local manners and maintain the image of being a "polite Japanese visitor."

Temples, Buddha, and Monks

Thai Buddhist Temples (Wat)

Temples (Wat) are the most sacred places for Thais. Visitors should avoid wearing shorts, sleeveless tops, or other revealing clothing. Thai monks are strictly forbidden from contact with women, so avoid unnecessary closeness or conversation with them.

Additionally, taking photos of Buddha statues for fun, or touching them, is strictly prohibited. Such actions can cause trouble, so do not pose next to a Buddha statue for photos or take pictures while wearing revealing clothing.

Mind Where You Place Your Feet

Basic Etiquette
The head is considered sacred. Avoid touching anyone’s head, even children.
Do not step over people. When passing in front of someone seated with their legs stretched out, politely ask before passing.
The left hand is considered unclean. Use your right hand when giving or receiving items.
Likewise, the soles of the feet are considered unclean. When sitting on the floor, avoid pointing your feet at people or Buddha statues. Placing feet on tables or chairs, such as resting feet on the seat in front of you on buses or trains, is considered very rude.
