Summer all year round!
Phuket belongs to the tropical climate zone and is a year-round summer island. The term “year-round summer” is often seen in tour brochures and travel guides, but what does it really mean? Japan has four seasons, so Japanese travelers may find it hard to imagine a “year-round summer country.” Simply put, it means that Phuket enjoys summer every day of the year. Naturally, it is hot—southern islands are meant to be warm.
Phuket’s seasons are divided into two main periods: the dry high season (October to April) and the rainy low season (May to September). Hotel rates fluctuate depending on the season, and tours and diving activities are influenced by the weather, so it is best to check the season in advance.
The Sunniest Season!
During Phuket’s high season, rainfall is minimal, and sunny, tropical weather dominates. Spending a day at the beach can result in deep tanning. The monsoon winds from the west subside, making the waves calm and the sea beautifully blue.
The hottest period is from April to mid-May, with daytime temperatures sometimes exceeding 36°C. High season also includes major events like Christmas, New Year, and Songkran (Thai New Year Water Festival in April). Cities and beaches become lively with international festivities, making these events a great time to visit. However, travel packages from Japan, airline tickets, and hotel rates are generally more expensive during high season.
Lush Green Season!
During Phuket’s low season, monsoon winds from the west bring more clouds and frequent rainfall. However, rain rarely lasts all day; it often comes in short, intense showers followed by clear skies. Total rainfall is roughly twice that of Japan. Fewer tourists visit, so beaches are less crowded, providing a more open and relaxed atmosphere.
This season also coincides with the harvest of fresh tropical fruits, allowing visitors to enjoy seasonal delights. During Japanese holidays like Golden Week and summer vacation, tour packages and flights are cheaper. Hotels also offer low-season rates, often 20%–50% less than high-season prices.
Phuket’s average temperature year-round is around 28°C. Sun protection is essential, even on cloudy days, especially for those with sensitive skin.
