The second most developed beach in Phuket after Patong Beach

Located just south of Patong Beach across the hill, and south of Cape Sai, Kata Beach is divided into two sections: Kata Yai Beach and Kata Noi Beach, but collectively referred to as Kata Beach. Kata Yai Beach stretches 1.4 km, and Kata Noi Beach is 700 meters long. Compared to Patong, both the town and beach are quieter and more relaxed. Kata Beach is the second largest beach area in Phuket after Patong. About 80% of Kata Yai Beach has been developed by the French resort Club Med, creating a European-style resort atmosphere along the entire beach.

Kata Noi Beach is dominated by the large Kata Thani Resort, which owns about 80% of the beach, making it feel like a private resort beach. Staying at Club Med or Kata Thani Resort allows visitors to enjoy most of the benefits of each respective beach. Especially for families, Club Med offers a wide range of activities and professional staff, making it ideal for families with elementary and middle school children. This is reflected in the fact that families are often seen strolling around the Kata area.

In addition to large resorts, Kata Beach also has a range of accommodations from budget hotels to guesthouses, making it possible to stay affordably. For travelers arranging their own Phuket trip, Kata Beach comes highly recommended! Restaurants offering international cuisine, souvenir shops, travel agencies, bars with local staff — everything is moderately available, and the family-friendly atmosphere gives the town a safe and relaxed vibe. Prices are also slightly lower than in Patong, so you can enjoy seafood without surprise costs, and the taste is excellent. Facing Phuket’s west coast, Kata Beach offers stunning sunsets over the Andaman Sea on clear days.

How to Enjoy Kata Beach: Dry Season (November–April)

During this period, the seasonal winds from the west subside, making it the best season for Kata Beach. The waves are gentle, and the shallow beach extends into beautiful, clear waters. The conditions are most stable in Phuket, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy the beach at leisure.

Many long-term European residents escaping the cold winter also frequent this area. They typically do not rush to participate in marine sports but spend their day reading on beach mats or swimming. As the sun sets, they enjoy a drink while watching the sunset. They are true masters of a relaxed beach lifestyle.

The southern part of Kata Beach features a reef where beach diving and snorkeling can be enjoyed. The marine life here is impressive, with a variety of species that even experienced local diving instructors enjoy exploring on their days off. Banana boat rides, jet skiing, and other water sports are also available, but for those who prefer to relax under an umbrella all day, this beach is highly recommended.

How to Enjoy Kata Beach: Rainy Season (May–October)

During the rainy season, Kata Beach takes on a completely different character. Strong winds and large waves due to the monsoon can sometimes lead to swimming restrictions with warning flags. Surfing becomes the popular activity during this season. While the waves are generally manageable for beginners, Kata Beach has hosted Quiksilver contests, making it a recognized surf spot. The ocean is usually uncrowded, offering a semi-private surfing experience if you avoid the peak waves.

However, rip currents can be strong, so it is recommended not to enter the water alone. The southern part of Kata Beach, near Kata Beach Resort, often has the best waves. Visitors usually rent longboards from local beach boys, but during the peak season, shortboards are preferred.
