Wat Prathong is said to have been built to protect a mysterious golden Buddha statue. In Thai, "Pra" means Buddha and "Thong" means gold.
Legend has it that a young buffalo herder tied his buffalo to a golden rod protruding from the ground, and he later fell ill and died suddenly. His father, who saw the boy in a dream, realized that the metal rod was the head of a Buddha statue. When excavated, the statue was so large that only the upper body could be revealed, and a hall was built above it. The partially visible golden Buddha, emerging from the floor, is a must-see.
